Beach expands with the death of big 'Fortress 41'

DEL MAR - The beach will expand by approximately 1,320 square feet this week when work is completed on the removal of a sea wall and patio, said Planning Director Jim Sandoval. Demolition started Saturday morning on the patio and surrounding walls at 1834 and 1836 Ocean Front that beach activist Bud Emerson called "Fortress 41."
The name referred to the approximately 40 feet of structures which extended onto the public beach, Emerson explained. The handmade wall built of stone and concrete was 33 feet wide, Sandoval said. "We don't know when the sea wall was built, but it was one of the biggest on the beach," Sandoval said.
Work on the MacNaughton wall is being done by the Baldwin Company, which donated time and equipment to remove the wall. That contribution will save the city approximately $35,000, said City Manager Gloria Curry. Company owner Jim Baldwin could not be reached for comment on the contribution.
